Musa Siam Ruby - Red Variegated Leaf Banana Plant ! Musa acuminata Tapo AA Dessert Banana Cultivar! - Talk about Eye Candy! The Musa Siam Ruby All Red Leaf Banana! - Zone 9 - 11 Wow, can this be real? Yes! This is a newly introduced Musa cultivar that I am told was found in Thailand about 2 years ago by a very enthusiastic member of the plant community. From what I was told, It was the only plant in the little town and fetched a great price originally when purchased from that small village. It is said to be a sport of the Musa Tapo. It was submitted for tissue culture and after a long worthwhile wait, it's now finally available for all to share in its rich red leaves with hue flecks of yellow and whitish striped midribs. Every leaf is a slightly different pattern. The pseudostem and leaves are red and remains this color as it reaches maturity and bears edible fruit. It does like heat and sunshine, the more light, the deeper the red. The baby plants begin as green, but once they begin to grow out past 8-12" they will begin to turn into their unique red color when grown in good light. They begin showing signs of red streaks on the leaves. Some reports already say they grow 8-15 ft tall. Since little is known and due to the place of origin and short finding time, we will treat this as a non-cold tolerant musa variety (similar to Musa Mysore) to be enjoyed for its vivid addition to gardens around the world. I'm close to sure that it being a musa banana, it would be able to survive most climates where other musa variety bananas can survive. The fruit of this is edible and described as sweet, being in the AA category (sweet, seedless bananas). If it does not fruit due to weather conditions, oh well. There are plenty of other varieties to choose from. No doubt I really want to see what the fruit looks like! Because of the stunning contrast it adds, I'm very certain it can withstand periods of freezing weather, just knocked to the ground to come back the following late winter/ early spring time would be the worst? Can't wait to find out myself. The worst that could happen in very cold environments is it could be used as an annual plant to be enjoyed during the growing season. Many of these plants seem to follow a similar pattern of its chartreuse variegation. If the leaves are half red and half yellow, they seem to continue in this pattern as it ages. I am not certain of this, it is just an observation and again, time will tell. In warmer climates, these awesome looking plants will grow all year and produce edible, most likely, very beautiful blooms and fruit, I believe are here to stay! Available right Now!
