House Plants!
House plants are perfect! They add environment, ambiance and a tropical feel to the rooms of your home. They add life to your emotional well being as their aesthetics appeal to your seeing sense and the fact that they use up your CO2 and give off oxygen help more than you think. Live plants are much better than silk plants, again filtering the air you breathe and gives you something to look forward to in watching them grow. Most plants sold as house plants are medium light feeders and need little care. Of course a few will need great care and more light, but can still be in present emitting life throughout your home. Some plants have been sold as houseplants were never meant to be, but have gained the reputation of being able to be grown inside. In reality no plants were meant to be grown indoors, but because some tolerate neglectful conditions or low light situations, they can be successfully grown indoors as house plants. All plants need light and moisture so whenever possible place your plants near natural light sources. We hope that you find this page useful. We try to be helpful in the growing department as well and have compiled a growing guide section to help ensure a better looking healthy plant. We will continue to update that section as our life permits. The plants available from this page are those that have been successfully grown indoors all over the world for many years and should bring you joy as well. If we don't have a growing guide about a plant that you're interested in, you can always email me to ask about information about growing plants indoors. Indoor growing is something that all plant lovers want to do. Who wouldn't want to see your favorite plant when you first wake up in the morning or enjoy it while relaxing near your computer or television ? The fact is that all plants naturally originate in outdoor environments and truly NO plant is suitable for indoor growing. The good news is that there are quite a few plants that can endure low light living or become acclimated to an indoor environment. The main thing to consider for indoor gardening is humidity and temperature. Just about every plant loves humidity so misting your indoor plants will benefit them greatly. Giving them enough light will also encourage excellent growth and long life. Both of my grandmothers always had indoor plants and did well. Another crucial thing to remember is to not over water them unless the plants are from a boggy type area. There are not too many plants that like "wet feet" so allowing the soil to dry out in-between waterings is essential for best indoor gardening as well. Please do research about a certain plant if you are not sure whether it is suitable for indoor living. Some palms are sold as indoor plants when the truth is that they tolerate the low light conditions. Misting these plants frequently will definitely make these plants happy! Washing you plants with warm soapy water and rinsing them off (believe it or not) will also help keep away pests like spider mites and other undesirables. There are also soap sprays available at your local garden center or online stores. It is not difficult to keep plants healthy and happy indoors and is why many are sold as such. At this time we do not have a wide selection on this page, but you can use the links below to find other plants that will grow indoors just as well. I will update this page to reflect a better variety for house plants as time permits. Thank you for looking.
Chartreuse Philodendron Scandens 'Aureum' - I found this awesome colored bright plant a few weeks ago and couldn't resist. The heart shaped leaves begin a creamy white and grow into bright yellow or blinding lime green. Even brighter than Xanthosoma Lime Zinger! I always loved how the variegated and green varieties get very large leaves while climbing trees and trellises, so this one will just blind anyone who dares to look. They will do well as an indoor houseplant as will the variegated pothos so you northern folks can easily have pleasure in this one as well. Outdoor growers in warmer climates (Zone 8b - 11) can experience this magnificent plant climb their tree trunks, walls, patio trellis or anywhere you decide. This also makes an excellent hanging basket plant. Protected under the tree's shade hammock from frost, it should retain its leaves to continue growing the next season. IF left unprotected, it will most likely lose its leaves but retain its structure to begin a fresh set the following season. Cant really go wrong here!
Alocasia Dewey's Reversa - (origin unknown) - Zones 8b and up - Another interesting Alocasia species to add to your collection and could fit very well in an indoor or outdoor situation. These were started in full sun and have since been moved to about 50% Shade after they filled the containers. This Alocasia sports deep dark veins and midribs on a lighter blue-grey-green leaf. The maximum overall height of these plants are about 12" tall and that makes this one an excellent windowsill plant or in house plant. Perfect for the decorative containers that can be mixed with other plants around your pool area or outdoor leisure area. I have always been a fan of the giant elephant ear plants and this one is not that, but was so interesting that I couldn't resist wanting to own one. I'm sure that you would feel the same way once you have these in your possession. They are easy to grow and are actually faster than I thought. When we planted these they were about an inch tall. This was less than 2 months ago. Now they are 3/4's of the way to maturity. These were grown in direct sun and although they have withstood the massive rain we have had lately, should be watered the same as other delicate Alocasias and that only when needed or when you know the soil is about to be dry. They produce pups readily and in no time will fill out your container to share with friends or have that many more for your viewing pleasure.
Alocasia Black Velvet - Zones 9 and up. New to CFF for 2008! After many inquiries, we are offering this beauty. I don't know what took me so long to really see this plant for all its splendor. It is one of those that took my surprise once I saw it in person. Had to have it. It is a fast growing dwarf alocasia species that will produce offsets regularly and since it is a clumping plant, it will not grow out of control. even if it could, it would be a really nice looking out of control plant! It certainly can not be hidden when in anyone's visual area. Don't let the size of this one fool you. It makes a perfect low light or indoor area plant that grabs eyes immediately after being in view. It would demands a second look. This one really stands out among the rest offering what few others do with the colors. Good things really do come in small packages. They are bold and contrasting with white veins on a rounded, closed lobe, dark green-black velvet textured leaf. The underside has a reddish glow that makes this a colorful addition. It is very easy to care for and seems to produce many babies creating the multiple effect in its container. The leaves are almost paper looking until you get up close and touch it. You know you're going to touch the leaves. Who could resist? An easy to care for medium sized plant that makes a great office, home or patio specimen or a great selection around your pond or potted plant lanai indoor houseplant or outdoors. Very Limited - Collectors Choice! $0.00 per Alocasia reginula Black Velvet mature Plant - Very Limited
Prayer Plant - "Erythroneura" - Also known by some as the 10 Commandment plants. It is called the prayer plant because in low light or darkness, the leaves fold upward resembling praying hands. This species has pretty red veins that run in uniform beside the peacock markings up the leaf. The back of leaf is a vivid purplish or maroon red. They grow to about 1-2 feet tall and as wide with many leaves. They are fast growing and easy to care for. they take medium light and don't do well in direct sun. These plants are great for the folks who have a hard time growing plants. if neglected, they will live. If it gets thin and leggy looking, you can snip it down to the crown and it will grow back. Very hard to kill and just a beautiful plant. Sold
