Palm Tree Seedlings, Starters & Young Juveniles
White Elephant Fan Palm Tree seedlings - Kerriodoxa elegans - Zones 8 -11 - New for 2008! - Cold Hardy! Purple hues and white Underside! This palm is not generally reported to be a cold hardy palm but we learned first hand during our extremely unexpected and harsh winter of 2009 that they do very well in temperatures that hovered 22-24ºF for 12-14 hours one night, 8 hours the next in the 20's and then several other nights of 3-4 hours below 32ºF. The leaves were not touched by the cold. the ones we left to the elements were not protected except for the Oak tree hammock and to our surprise, none of them were damaged. This certainly is an exceptional palm to grow! These are not reported to be cold hardy by palm experts, how ever, we have never protected them for the last 3 years and they have never been harmed by the cold. Originating from Thailand, the "White Elephant Palm" is beautiful and elegant with its very large, completely circular, and only shallowly divided fan-shaped leaves that are bright white underneath. The White Elephant palm only grows in just a tiny area of Thailand making it very rare. It is best suited for warm subtropical and tropical, wind-sheltered areas, but also does well as a stunning house plant. The lowest reported temperatures known by us 29º here being protected from the frost under the oak hammock. They have endured well the last two seasons since it has taken this long for them to grow after waiting about 6 months for them to germinate. They are now about 8-12" tall with 1-3 leaves with nice roots. Even though they took a pretty long time to germinate, one they gave out their first leaf, they have been steady growing. The leaves already display the white undersides that give them their name, The White Elephant Palm. If you are not able to grow it outdoors in your climate, you can certainly enjoy this as an indoor houseplant! These photos don't really depict the best quality of this palm, they are prettier in person. These large seedlings are already displaying the silvery sheen underside. Very beautiful Already! If you live in cold areas, these would make excellent atrium or observatory (controlled environment) palms for many years. Fluorescent lighting could be used to really bring out the colors at night. Chambeyronia macrocarpa - Red Flamethrower Palm - Cold Hardy 24º F (before death) - Some have given the name Red Spear Palm. No matter what you call it, it is a very regal palm that can take some cold weather yet it is still not widely used as much as it could. We are positive that as of 2009's insane winter weather here that they can withstand temperatures to at least 24ºF. I know it was 22ºf at one point during our freezes, but I do not know how long it stayed at that temperature and is why I am safely saying 24º. Of course if possible it is NOT a good idea to leave them to that cold environment as the outer leaves were browned, yet the palms remained alive and are growing new leaves as the weather warms. Safely when planted in the ground for larger palms I can recommend 33ºf. If your Flame Thrower palm will be exposed to frost, then they should be covered with frost cloth, never use plastic unless it is as a supported housing that is not touching any leaves. This applies to all palms and plants. They begin to produce their beautiful bright red leaves after they reach 12-14 inches of growth in healthy environments. They will continue to produce red leaves from that point forward. The Red leaf Flame Thrower macrocarpa palms are fast growing and very easy to care after. Their bright new red leaves last about 10-11 days after emerging and turn into a deep shade of green recurving and drastically arching leaves. Reports of it being an excellent indoor potted plant give hope to those in northern areas where this palm can be enjoyed by all for many years. Even if it didn't have an extremely bright red leaf, the colorful mottled and swollen crownshaft make it eye appealing sitting above that heavily ringed trunk. The leaves are dark green and leathery to touch and appearance when mature. No collection should be without this palm tree shouting its glory from the center of the tree. Limited! Silver Rock Palm, Super Silver - Brahea sp - Zones 7-11 - Rare and COLD HARDY! Able to take very severe freezes. These recently discovered palms originate from the high altitudes of Central Mexico found around 6000ft above sea level. The tops of the leave are glaucous blue green while the undersides shimmer in silvery white! Being thornless as well, an even better trait, they eventually grow to heights of about 30+ feet tall. Growing slowly until reaching the juvenile stage and then about 1 foot per year. Once established they can stand long periods of drought as is where they were discovered in dry conditions sporadically spaced throughout the mountain valleys of Central Mexico. The Silver Rock Palms is one palm tree that can be used in the landscape as shrub type (low appearance settings) for a few years until they burst into their mature growth patterns. Give them a good width for space in time as I'm sure they will give a showy sheen to any area once they have grown past the large seedling stage. A very easy to care for palm and as seedlings, should not have any issues in transplanting from here to where ever they are relocated. With the cold hardiness that this palm is capable of, its able to being enjoyed in just about any palm lovers garden, this is another very cold hardy and adaptable palm that northerners can enjoy as well as southern populations. Seedlings are green and gradually turn more blue/white as they age. This is our first time growing these and they are strong out of the ground and ready to be grown your collection! Limited - Available Now! New Addition! RootsPine Palm (Cryosophila warscewiczii) - Cold Hardy to 32ºF - Also known as Silver Star Palm and duel horticulture classification of Cryosophila albida. Here is a palm seldom seen any palm collection. We successfully germinated the fresh seeds and now they are ready for you to watch them grow. The solitary trunked Cryosophila warscewiczii's unique sharp spines continue from the roots throughout the palms thin trunk to the compact crowning of the frond petioles. Yes, they are volatile yet if you merely admire them and do not touch them, you're good to go and are adding the contrasting white colors to your green environment's background. In native habitat of Panama and the coastal rain forests of Costa Rica they reach about 15-20 feet tall. When grown in a container, they will be a wonderful conversation piece for all palm tree enthusiasts. Some reports say that these palms are not known to be able to survive freezing temperatures while others say they can take a mild freeze/frost. So growing them in a container for portability in regions that are apt to freeze and frosts is recommended. Due to their compact size, they would be able to grow in just about any size container, we recommend 14"-32" rimmed and 12-18" in depth for optimal root health and overall stability. The palms eventually produce fan leaves that are coated in a glaucous silver/white in color on the undersides while green on upper sides. The fan leaves grow compact on short petioles so the overall top portion of this palm is not very large making another great attribute as an indoor palm to grow. The younger juvenile leaves that are pushed out could be compared to certain Licuala species in the way that the ends resemble being snipped off with a pair of scissors. As it matures they out grow this phase and the fan tips are more pointed as most fan palms grow. They are said to be very tolerant of indoor conditions which clinches it as a "take homer" for most people. Their over all size also makes them attractive for indoor palm growers as they will be able to live in your home, patio or apartment year after year without worry of having to find it a new home. We recommend these not be placed in full sun as they are best suited for filtered light as an understory palm or indoor palm with adequate light. If you live in an area that is not prone to freezes, you may one of the lucky collectors who are able to plant this palm directly in the ground once old enough and enjoy this as something that few people have and are able to do. Already these seedlings are displaying very light white shoots. There will not be a chance of transplant shock at this size. New Addition! Johannesteijsmannia altifrons - Green Joey, Diamond Palm - Cold Hardy 28º F - This palm is known widely for its unique undivided leaf shape and very tall growth. Its leaves are unsegmented and diamond shaped at the tips with a corrugated look. These are pretty and hardier than most will believe. They can take moderate frosts and light short freezes when protected. They reach 20 feet tall keeping the same appearance you see here. you can surf the net searching photos and see men standing under these magnificent giant plants! One of the coolest palms on the planet in my opinion. These seedlings here have one-two leaves and are approximately 18 -24 inches tall - get them while they are available, they're going FAST! $0.00 per Green Joey Palm hardy seedling - SoldRhapis Multifida or "Finger Palm and Jade Empress Palm" Cold Hardy 22-24º F (probably colder) These are NOT the common Rhapis excelsa Lady Palm. These are spectacularly attractive palms! The fan leaves (as you can see in the picture below of a mature palm) open fully round and are separated into many very narrow leaflets, giving the appearance of a hand. It spews out fronds from a very narrow trunk. These are similar to the common lady palm but are much more elegant in their appearance. They originate from southern china and are extremely cold hardy being able to withstand several degrees of frost without damage! Don't miss out! We have only a very few left until summer! They are a naturally clustering palm and Make excellent indoor specimens as well due to their low light tolerance. They are moderate growing from this stage and once they get a few leaves they really take off and form pups at the base and the pups are fast growing. The cold doesn't seem to effect them here in our area where we get short freezes that dip into the low 20's on occasion. Very easy and fast growing. They are naturally clumping and in a few years could give your area a very unique look! Euterpe oleracea Acai Assai Super Berry (Pará Dwarf) - Zones 8b-11, Cold Hardy to about 32ºF: This Euterpe palm has been known for centuries by the natives where it resides in native habitat of Brazil for its highly nutritious berries. Not only are these palms majestic in appearance but are a natural source of nutrients. A true hidden gem! Trees grow to heights of about 10-12ft on slender trunks with wispy pinnate feather fronds. The heart of the palms are also eaten yet this destroys the palms. Because they are so fast growing in tropical climates, eating the hearts is widely practiced where these palms are grown. They can begin producing their delicious fruit only after about 3 years after germination. They do need tropical climate to produce this fast and are not known to grow indoors without proper lighting. The other variety of Acai palm produces about half as much fruit per palm. The fruit from this species is so nutritious that its thought to cure cancer or at minimum prevent it from its high anti-oxidant content. The health benefits continue with anti-aging properties, weight loss, heart disease, blood pressure and diabetes. The darker the berry or fruit in all fruit plants, generally means the higher the nutrient content. Other foods that are rich in similar ingredients (anthocyanins) that reduce the freer radicals include, but certainly not limited to: blueberries, red grapes and red wines. I have seen the juice available in local grocery stores over the last 2-3 years. it is a worthwhile beverage. WAY better than having a V-8! Probably, these palms could grow in a controlled environment such as a greenhouse or glass house conservatory in northern areas or areas that are prone to freezes and heavy frosts. These palms are a very high producer of seeds and just two palms that are producing seed berries for you could probably produce enough for your average house. Remember that palms are not actual trees but are a member of the grass family and cannot be trimmed as to control their height. They must be allowed to grow. Since these are naturally short palms, they do make it easier for harvesting. It's best to harvest these before the animals get to them first. Euterpe espiritosantensis - Zones 8b-11, Cold Hardy to about 32ºF: Another species of Euterpe from Brazil more related to the E. edulis than others that is found growing near the Atlantic Ocean coastal regions. This has recently become one of the most sought after palms and we have a few seedlings available that germinated from fresh seeds. It is a midsized palm reaching heights to about 30 ft tall, with solitary slender trunks as other Euterpe species sport yet this one displays a vivid, bright yellow crownshaft once it grows past the crowning stage. Fast growing like the rest we should be able to enjoy this palm in about 2-3 years. It's native habitat are the humid montane rain forests. The leaves are more drooping in nature than other Euterpe species and the yellow crownshaft is the dead give away for this amazing palm introduction. Borneo Fishtail Palm (Caryota No - Caryota rumphiana var. borneensis) - Rare in cultivation and vulnerable in conservation status. The seeds from this palm have only been offered a few times to the general public and usually about every other 3-4 years. These palms are easy to grow once they germinate and are cold hardy to about 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Germination usually takes about 6 months from seed sprout to seedling status. They are from Borneo Southeast Asia and are just a massive, beautiful palm with huge triangular shaped, fern-like leaves. The graceful appearance will certainly leave all in awe that cast their eyes on it once it is a specimen. The conservation status of this palm is vulnerable so you would be doing nature a favor by keeping these beauties in population. They are fast growing and form a thick solitary trunk to cast their majestic fronds out up to 50 feet tall. These can be grown indoors and medium light to full sun situations and need rich moist fertile soil to do their best. The most graceful and rare of ALL Fishtail Palms! Zebra Fishtail Palm (Caryota zebrina) - Zone 9 and up - Rare in cultivation. Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) - Hardy Zone 9b-11. Sadly these aren't cold hardy and should be kept from frosts and freeze but are wonderfully unique palms that look like no other. They can however take light frosts and very short periods of freeze but the current leaves will become brown, spotted or crispy. The tree may not die unless left for extended hours in those harsh temperatures but is recommended to be kept from them. When more mature, the base is colored cement gray and is swollen, eventually narrowing towards the green crownshaft, emitting its somewhat wide recurving pinnate 'feather' fronds. Easily (and commonly) grown in containers for years and make an excellent specimen to show off! They are pretty fast growing and if you're a collector and don't have this, you're missing out! During the cold weather it is best to not water them much until summer growth begins and then water very heavily. They are salt spray tolerant as well and will grow without problems near beach side areas. Since they are a large growing palm, they will need room to grow, please keep this in mind before planting in a permanent location. Ravenea Sp. Sold Out - $0.00 per large seedlings approx: 24-36 Inches tall 1-3 young leaves ! Beccariophoenix alfredii Palm - Zone 8 and up - Cold Hardy, Very Rare in cultivation! Said to be cold hardy to handle moderate freezes/frosts. Originates from the high plateaus of Madagascar where the temperatures regularly drop below freezing nightly during the winters. This palm grows to heights of about 30+ ft and is able to handle humid conditions. There is little information yet as these are so new to cultivation. The general overall appearance is that of a coconut palm until it reaches 5+ feet of trunk, so these should be a very welcomed palm for those of us who are not able to grow coconut palms due to regional temperatures and other factors. The crownshaft is yellow with reddish tints from a distance and just adds that much more color to your area. A fast growing palm that is sure to find its way into the hearts of the collectors. Because of the tolerance of freezes, these should make an excellent landscape specimen from juveniles to adulthood. These do well in a full sun position once established, but the ones you receive from here should be grown in a deep container in filtered light until they are about 2 feet tall and acclimated to full sun eventually. This is not one for the indoor environment for size and non-tolerance of too low a light. When in the juvenile stage until past the crowning from the ground they are a "fountain of feathers" throwing the pinnate fronds into the air about 8 ft like a fireworks display. New Addition! Giant Window Pane Palm - (Beccariophoenix Sp Eastern) A very coveted palm to own! Seeds are only offered about every 2-4 years and if they are not collected and germinated when fresh, there is no point in trying to grow them from seed. The fresh seeds are only viable for about 2 months. There is a cousin to this palm without the narrow slatted leaves that is not window form and is a little more cold hardy than these but not nearly as beautiful. Recorded by palm experts in the past to be Cold Hardy to about 28 ºF and should be protected from frosts or leaves will become spotted. One cold spell that lasts more than a few hours, a 'hard freeze', may kill this palm. If it has been touched by the cold (but not killed) they will of course grow again when the weather warms and the spotty leaves will be gone in no time. This is fast growing once it becomes established (producing about 5-10 new leaves per year) and makes an outstanding palm for the avid collector that leaves a fantastic impression on everyone! They will be pretty large even within about a year from now, so give it space where ever you plant this. The leaves are a creamy light green that can even be seen in the adults. The trunks eventually become large and woody growing to heights of about 20 feet retaining their creamy whitish-green color (see pics below). Here in winter of 2009 we experienced the coldest we've had in about 20+ years. Some said it was a record breaking few nights. We dipped down to recorded temperatures of 19ºF in areas just a mile away from our property, but our thermometers read 21º at the coldest low. We thought these (and many others) were gone, but in late March, early April 09 the Window Pane palms that didnt die, began to emerge new leaves! So, you can drawn your own conclusions to make a decision. They all were BROWNED to the buds some showing a hint of green, but I thought they were all dead until they began to re-grow. I did lose about half of what we had because we were not expecting this cold for this long and they have endured freezes in the past with no issues besides the potted leaves. But for 8 nights around or below 25 and three of those nights consecutively hovering at 21-22 for fourteen hours straight, I am still surprised that ANYTHING came back that was not protected. And yes, I found out just what plants could at least handle that much cold abuse from our elephant ears to the palms. Many are coming back to life and that places them in a new cold hardy category. No coverings were going to save them from the actual temperatures that they were subjected to and to my great surprise, many of our plants lived! Of course some died. The spineless leaves are large and are a beautiful pinnate type spreading out even before it begins to form a trunk. These could be grown efficiently on the patio or indoors in a container (if you have the space) for many years until too large and makes a great foliage expression! What a unique and beautiful palm to add to your collection! This is a good price since in about 2 years they will cost about $70-$100 each palm! Get them now while you can, they are going fast!
Licuala Grandis (Ruffled Fan Palm) as it is commonly named. Cold Hardy to zone 9. This is an outstanding palm for the avid collector that makes a fantastic impression! These palms have almost a completely round fan leaf and grow on a very thin trunk upwards from 8-12 feet tall. They are not very cold hardy but can easily be protected in a greenhouse situation in colder areas or grown in a container and brought indoors for the colder weeks. These are known to be an excellent indoor palm and are sometimes seen growing in well-to-do hotel lobbies. They are semi fast growing although the seeds can take 6 months or more to germinate. Ours took between 5 and 9 months and still a few stragglers after 13 months. We have done the work for you and the wait on the seeds. No need to buy a few seeds to only have one or two come up and wait forever.
Licuala peltata var. sumawongii - Cold Hardy to 28ºF AWESOME FOLIAGE! Here we have some cool seedlings that will grow into one of the most spectacular forms of the Licuala species and the largest undivided leafed Fan palm! The leaves get, large, flat and well, see the photo and you'll know why you want one as bad as I did! The leaves can grow to 7 feet in diameter! They can handle colder temperatures than most any other Licuala variety and I know from experience that the L. grandis can take mild to moderate freezes, so this one should do even better! They still should be protected if possible and protected from windy areas to avoid ripped adult leaves. The trunk is short, but the leaves will hide it anyway. These make an elegant appearance as a conservatory or lobby plant with plenty of room to display. Easily container grown for northern applications and can grow in the container for many years to enjoy. Don't miss out! No chance on unviable seeds. Trachycarpus wagnerianus - Miniature Dwarf Chusan, Waggie Palm, Dwarf Himalayan Windmill Palm - Cold hardy to zero degrees, this is one well known for its northern placement. They are reported to be pest free like most of the fan palm varieties so little care is needed. The compact fan leaves are deeply split and rigid and appear so even from a distance. The Waggie or miniature Chusan palm is known to be able to withstand harsh freezes and snow without flinching. Being just as desirable, the leaf formation is rounded fan frond, tough and rigid in appearance and structure. These palm trees make the best northern variety due to their indoor tolerance throughout the winter months and having the capability of living for years in a container. The palms do reach heights of about 30 feet over time and because of their slow growth rate can be enjoyed for many years as a portable potted specimen to arrange in your plant kingdom how ever they look the best. They spread out to about 5 feet when maintained in a container and will reach a max spread of about 10-15 feet once they outgrow that environment. They will grow faster once forming a trunk as most palms have this attribute. Seeds on this species seems to vary as far as germination rates are concerned. I suspect that the fresher the seeds, the better chance of germination. I have tried germinating them in the past only to have 5-9 out of 1000 peek out of the earth. Finally we have a batch that germinated readily and are soon to be looking for a new home. New Addition! Stone Gate Palm (Trachycarpus Princeps) - Real & Rare! Cold Hardy to 8-10 ºF ! Only discovered in 1995, this palm is coveted by many palm enthusiasts as THE most sought after stiff fan palms of all time. The leaves are flat and rounded, the backs of the leaves are a striking silver-white in color and are faster growing than the Chusan. A cousin to the Chusan, this palm has proven to be a steady grower and as cold hardy as the rest of its genus. Winter is coming and this little guy will actually grow just as steady during the cold months/weeks as in the heat of summer. The T. Princeps are only found growing in one tiny site in western China. They are a bit pricey but these are well worth the purchase. There have only been a very limited number of seeds offered and I've read that if they aren't fresh, they are very difficult to germinate, if they do at all. Thankfully we obtained fresh seeds and have a limited amount of baby palms available for you. VERY LIMITED
Paroutis Everglades Palm (Acoelorrhaphe Wrightii). Cold Hardy to 20ºF. We know first hand that they are at least cold hardy to 22ºF without damage to leaves. These rare to most nurseries is sometimes called Silver Saw Palm, Madeira or Everglades Palm (because the underside of the leaves are a beautiful sheen blue/silver), these grow tall and straight with slender brown furry trunks (about 6-10" in diameter) and have a neat in a appearance, fan shaped leaf set. The Paroutis palm is found growing naturally in southern Florida and on some Caribbean islands and the west Indies. These palms are very fast growing and prefer full sun in wet/moist soil but can stand drought once established. They grow to heights of about 15-20 ft and produce many pups or clumps with a few towering over the others. They require bright light, plenty of water and rich moist soil. While full sun is best, I have seen many of these growing in under the oak hammocks and inside pool deck areas. What a beauty! Adult Griffith Cycad (Cycas Pectinata) Cycads are known to some as "living fossils" due to their Jurassic look. Cycads have been collected for years. Now there are more "new and exciting finds" for uses as a landscape item. Ours have all been germinated form seed and raised in Zone 9 and ready for your landscape! They are known for their crowning stiff leafed appearance of the Jurassic era. We hope you find our selection interesting. Cycads prefer rich moist, well drained soil. Very easy to take care of these types need little fertilization to grow into healthy mature plants. Don't over water your cycad as rot is the main enemy. Cycas Pectinata - Threatened in Natural Habitat - Very Cold Hardy - The Griffith Cycad is one of only a few that will form forked trunks. Rare in cultivation and even in the wild these are not as common as they once were. Being Cold Hardy to 28ºF degrees, it will reward you with rapid growth throughout its long life. These are one of the few rare cycads that do form forking trunks. The Griffith Cycad is a large, beautiful and robust Cycad from northern India and Southeast Asia for warm temperate to tropical areas, rare in cultivation. These are unique in that most cycads or palms for that matter do not branch as this one does. May reach 50 feet in height. Fast and easy growing, it quickly makes a fabulous landscaping or house plant or that one of a kind fixture around your Koi pond. Very Easy to care for plants! They already have a leaf aprox: 8-12" and are growing strong with a chunky root. It will grow rapidly until your grandchildren's grandchildren have grandchildren. The plant roots are fragile (similar to the consistency of a carrot), but if you remove and unpack them carefully from the well packed box, they will be fine. PLEASE remove them carefully from the packing box. Add this to your collection and have something that few people do! Thank you for looking. Cycas Siamensis (Thai Sago) - An interesting small Cycad from Thailand and neighboring countries, which has a swollen base to the trunk and an attractive crown containing many recurved, dark green leaves. Ideal for the tropical to warm temperate garden, it requires partial sun and a plentiful supply of water. Given these, it is easy and reliable, deserving a much greater popularity. Very Cold Hardy
